Both my mother's mother and my father's stepmother were named Hendrikje van 't Hul. I discovered they are related, by the same ancestors Brand and Jannetje van den Hul. My step-grandmother's family is a farmer family living near Kampen. It is researched back to 1745. Several marriages have occurred between members of this family and people with the name Netjes, or related to the Netjes family.
The name van 't Hul is found a lot in the north of 'The Veluwe' and in Noord-West Overijssel. Not related branches can be found in the region Ede/Wageningen and Arnhem/Nijmegen. Besides van 't Hul also the names 'van het Hul', 'op den Hul' and 'van den Hul' occur. Some people called 'van den Hul' have married people called 'van 't Hul'. Some members of the family, in Amsterdam and other countries, spell their name like Van 't Hull.
The word Hul is used in de language 'old-veluws' and means hill or higher land. The word 'heethul' can be explained like this: 'heet' means heath, so it is a higher located piece of heath. On the Veluwe there are pieces of land that have received a different usage by reclamation, agriculture or city building, but which have the word 'Hul' in the name. In Oosterwolde one can find the Hulweg, now 3 farms built in 1850 are on this road. Once the farm my ancestors lived was on this spot. People who remained living on the 'Hul' got the surname 'Op den Hul', meaning 'On the Hill'. Their brothers who left to live somewhere else were called 'van 't Hul', meaning 'coming from the Hill'.
A few miles from Oosterwolde, in Oldebroek one can find the "Hullepad". This is a beautifull lane, up to a hul with 3 farms. One of these farms now is a museum, and also the residence of the genealogical organisation.
The database contains 7.600 people belonging to the van 't Hul families.
